Hemet's first community-led public mural was a civic engagement initiative by the Healthy Valley Foundation designed to activate public spaces, fostering civic pride, contribute to neighborhood revitalization and community well-being. The project utilized a community-centered approach rooted in storytelling, collaboration, and mentorship. The mural's design was informed through an online survey and community brainstorming sessions, where residents identified the surrounding mountain landscape, California poppies at Diamond Valley Lake, and the red-tailed hawk as meaningful local symbols. Artists and residents further contributed to the creative process through a Plein Air Sketch Day at Simpson Park, where observations of Hemet's natural beauty helped inspire the final design. Community involvement continued with a Community Paint Day, inviting people of all ages and experience levels to help paint the mural and take ownership of the project. The initiative also provided hands-on training for 11 emerging muralists giving local artists valuable experience in large-scale public art while strengthening connections throughout the community.
