“Your Horizon is Here” Mural
1st Community-Led Public Mural in Hemet!
This mural project is a civic engagement initaive from Healthy Valley Foundation with a mission to activate public spaces through a community informed mural to foster civic pride, neighborhood revitalization and overall well-being in the City of Hemet. Rosy Cortez served as the led the muralist to manage the production and emerging mural team with a community-centered approach rooted in storytelling and mentorship.
Community Input and Design
The mural project began with an online survey and and in person Community Brainstorm meeting with residents who shared stories, hopes, and themes that shaped the mural’s design. The design was based on most requested themes of the beautiful surrounding mountain landscape, California Poppy bloom at Diamond Valley lake and daily sightings of the Red tail Hawk. The mural acts as a welcoming into the heart of downtown while adding vibrancy and pride.
Plein-air sketch Day
Artists and residents were invited to participate and practice sketching outdoors. A day to connect with other creatives and appreciate the natural landscape of Hemet at Simpson Park. Some of the sketches served as jumping off points in the design.
Community Paint Day
The mural kicked off with a Community Paint Day where the public was invited to help lay the first brush strokes on the mural! No experience was needed! Hemet Valley Arts Association recieved a side art project that will be dispalyed during the mural reception.
Emerging Muralists
Our call for artists generated an incredible response with 40 applicants, resulting in 11 emerging artists (ages 16+) selected to participate in this inaugural project. Artist were selected based on fundamental understanding of art principles, connection to Hemet/region and interest in expanding into mural making. The emerging artists assisted in the completion of the mural using a variety of techniques while connecting with each other and wider public.
